The Error:

I added GPS coordinates to my image in Lightroom and went to save the changes, but it came up with an error message “Some save metadata operations were not performed. Photos have read-only access”?

Whatever I did, it would not save the metadata from within Lightroom?

  • I checked the file properties in File Explorer (right click and select properties). The Attributes were not set to Read-only?
File Properties in File Explorer – The Attributes Were Not Set to Read-Only
  • In File Explorer (right click and select properties) Security\Group or user names: I was the administrator and had full control?
  • I updated the metadata for the image in Adobe Bridge, but it had no effect in Lightroom?

The strange thing is, I could add GPS coordinates to another photo in the same folder, and save the metadata without any problems?

The Solution:

The image I was editing was contained in a folder:

What I originally did…

  • All the images in that folder had been set to read only.
  • I had globally removed all the read-only attributes in that folder by selecting all the photos, and using Adobe Bridge’s “Unlock All Items”.
  • The read-only attribute was removed from all the photos in that folder.
  • The metadata would not save for some images?

What did I do to solve the issue..?

  • I checked the actual folder that the images were contained in.
  • Under folder properties in File Explorer (right click and select properties). The folder Attributes were still set to Read-only, (the images contained within that folder were not read only)?
Folder Properties in File Explorer – The Attributes Were Set to Read-Only
  • I deselected the folder ‘Read-only’ attribute and the issue was solved.

The moral of the story here is to check the folder properties, as well as the image properties for the ‘Read-only’ setting.
